The idea behind the PKhour, unlike the Pecha Kucha Nights, is to select three topics that are focused upon a specific skillset - like leadership, business communication, social responsibility, community asset development. During the hour long event, the three presentations (each 6min40sec long) are run with NO space between, so that they fill the first 20 minutes. This means that when speaker two sees the presentation at 18 of 20, they get up and stand on deck, waiting for speaker one to conclude. When speaker two has slide 1 of 20 showing, the microphone for speaker one is turned off and speaker two is live.
It is important to push through all three presentations, because what follows is 40 minutes for Q&A with the presenters. A space for small groups is set up for each presenter, so that attendees can go to one or all of the break-out groups to get answers to their questions. Using this format it makes it possible to compress a months worth of professional development into one single hour.
By keeping the topics loosely related, it is possible to appeal to a wider audience. In the break-out discussion groups, the presenters will have handouts which provide even more information to the attendees. This approach has been proven successful in Higher Education. Faculty and Administration enjoy the pace and variety possible in the 3 per hour format.
